Das Lied erschien zwischen 1780 und 1800. Es wurde während der 1848 Revolution von der Zensur verboten. Von Flugblättern ist das Lied seit 1870 in zwei Versionen bekannt. Sein Text entspricht dem Gedankengut der Aufklärung: die Bevölkerung will sich von der geistigen
Bevormundung der Herrscher befreien. das Lied wendet sich gegen die damals herrschende Vorstellung "cuius regio, eius religio" – die den Herrschern das Recht einräumte, auch die Religion ihrer Untertanen zu bestimmen. Besonders während der Metternichschen Restaurationsperiode gewann der Text neue Aktualität und stand über Jahre hinweg auf der Liste der
durch die staatliche Zensur verbotenen Lieder. Die vierte Strophe ist vermutlich jüngeren Ursprungs. Sie steht so in »Lieder der Brienzer Mädchen« (zwischen 1810 und 1820 gedruckt) oder ähnlich in Hoffmann-Richters »Schlesischen Volksliedern« (Leipzig 1842). Das Lied ist in ganz Deutschland heute noch bekannt. In der zweiten Strophe ironisiert der
unbekannte Verfasser die Pressezensur des Absolutismus: sie erlaubte nur Gedanken, die »sich schicken« - »und alles in der Still’«!
